Psoriasis of the scalp

The term ‘psoriasis’ is derived from the Greek word 'psora', which means itch. However, psoriasis is more sever than just an itch.

Psoriasis is a chronic, recurring skin disease with varying degrees of severity, from mild outbreaks, where the person may not even be aware they have psoriasis, to severe cases, which can be socially disabling and, in rare instances, life-threatening.

Around 2 per cent of the population have psoriasis. It affects all ages, but the early onset is most often seen during late teenage years, while the late-onset form strikes those between the ages of 50 and 60. Psoriasis is not contagious.

Psoriasis of the scalp may occur in isolation or in combination with other forms of psoriasis. Most often it affects the back of the head, but other areas as well as the whole scalp may be affected.

Scalp psoriasis is characterized by thick silvery white scale on patches of very red skin. Flaking of the scale is common, which may be confused with 'dandruff'.

In severe cases, psoriasis of the scalp may cause localized hair loss, but scalp psoriasis is generally not considered to be a cause of permanent balding.

Most treatments for scalp psoriasis will need to be used regularly for several weeks before a benefit is seen. Unfortunately, many of them are both messy and smelly.

Bioscal® is used to remove obstacles to natural, healthy hair growth, to prepare and stimulate the scalp for new hair growth and to optimize the growth conditions for the new hair. However, underlying medical disorders, such as psoriasis, should be treated by medical practitioners.
